The 750 photo limit for group registration, and what to do with more

"The group must include no more than 750 photographs." That is the rule for both published (GRPPH) and unpublished (GRUPH) group claims.

Checked against copyright.gov on 21 October 2026. General information, not legal advice. Register My Photos is not affiliated with the US Copyright Office.

What the Office says

  • "Applicants may submit up to 750 photographs with each application." (GRPPH help)
  • "If an applicant submits more than 750 photographs, the Office may exclude the additional photos from the claim or may refuse registration." (GRPPH help)
  • In the application, "Number of Photographs in Group" is a drop down list from 1 to 750 (GRPPH help). Circular 42 says: "The maximum number of photographs in the group is 750."

If you have more than 750

  1. Split the photos into groups of 750 or fewer. Each group is a separate application with its own fee and its own case number.
  2. For published photos, also split by calendar year: "All the photographs must be published in the same calendar year" (GRPPH help).
  3. Give each group a title. For groups from the same client or project the Office suggests adding "Group 1 of 2", "Group 2 of 2" and so on (GRPPH help).
  4. Make a separate titles list for each group, named with that group's title and case number.

Other limits that come up with big batches

  • 500 MB per file. "The maximum size for each file is 500 MB." Larger uploads can be broken into "two or more smaller files so that no file exceeds 500 MB" (eCO FAQ).
  • 1,995 characters. "You may provide up to 1995 characters in the Photograph Titles field." For more titles, save and click "New" to add another entry (GRPPH help).

Register My Photos splits batches by the 750 cap and by calendar year for you, and splits zips under 500 MB.

The Office has said it plans to "permit larger numbers of photographs to be submitted with each application" in a future system (proposed fee schedule, July 2026). Until that changes, 750 is the limit.

Questions

What is the maximum number of photos in one group registration?

750. Both the GRPPH and GRUPH help pages say the group must include no more than 750 photographs.

What happens if I submit more than 750 photos?

The GRPPH help says the Office may exclude the additional photos from the claim or may refuse registration.

Is there a minimum number of photos?

The eCO drop down allows 1 to 750, but Circular 42 describes group registration for two or more photographs. Check with the Office if you plan to file a group of one.
